The western is no longer a genre of production but a genre of inheritance: most of what is well rated is over forty years old, and the little still being shot converses with that past rather than continuing it. The catalogue is therefore narrow and votes few, which justifies the lowered floor. It is also one of the rare genres where the original and the dubbed version do not quite tell the same story.
The 2000s are the digital tipping point: the decade in which effects stopped being remarkable and became invisible.
