What to know before choosing
A film under ninety minutes is not a failed film someone cut down: it is a form, and often the hardest one. It has to set up, develop and resolve in the time an ordinary film spends on its opening act alone. The genres that excel at it are not the obvious ones — animation, documentary and comedy hold this length far better than drama, which needs time to be believed. This is the selection to open on a weeknight, when there is an hour and a half left and not one more.
Choosing by running time is the most honest of the three reflexes and the least practiced. Yet it is the only constraint you know for certain at the moment of choosing: you often do not know what you feel like, but you always know what time it is. Taro eira asks that question on the first screen, and even weights the running time it suggests by the hour and the day of the week — a Tuesday at eleven at night and a Saturday at nine do not call for the same film.
